ABOUT US
Jerico Project
JERICO is a European project aimed at fulfilling the need for a common European network of coastal research infrastructures. At this time, the number of marine observation systems is rapidly increasing. However, there are major differences throughout Europe in terms of the way these systems are designed, the parameters they measure, their maintenance and quality control, etc. Until now, development of coastal observatories has been each country’s national concern with a short-term perspective. Therefore, the main challenge for the scientific community is to increase consistency and sustainability among these dispersed infrastructures, addressing their future within a European framework. That is the aim of the JERICO project.
In addition, JERICO strives to contribute to international efforts in researching climate change, provide coastal data for research and forecasting, and fulfill the needs of scientists and society as a whole.
The Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA)
The Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA) is a research center jointly governed by the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones CientÃficas and the University of the Balearic Islands.
IMEDEA develops scientific and technical interdisciplinary research in the area of Natural Resources. Its framework is the ocean and its litoral, which encompasses islands.
Nowadays IMEDEA’s activity is centered on the effects that Global Change has on such ecosystems and how to achieve an integrated and sustainable management of coastal areas.
ICTS SOCIB
ICTS SOCIB is a new system of Coastal Ocean Observing and Forecasting located in the Balearic Islands, a new facility of facilities open to international access. SOCIB responds to a change of paradigm in the observation of our oceans and coasts, an observation that has evolved from being centered on a unique platform, the oceanographic ships, to an observation now based on multi-platform and integrated systems (using buoys, satellites, ships, autonomous underwater vehicles, HF radar, ARGO profilers, etc.), all transmitting data and integrated through the new data management systems.
